The Big Reveal

The next day, I was in a wonderful mood. It was actually a relief to be able to stop worrying about whether my wife was cheating and just to have the confident knowledge that she had been banging every guy in town. I found that the idea didn’t bother me as much as I had thought it would. I also enjoyed the satisfaction of knowing something my wife didn’t know I knew.

Carrie on the other hand was in a miserable state the next morning. Her eyes were swollen and she complained of a wicked hangover, so I offered to make the coffee and scramble our morning eggs.

“I’m never smoking pot with Harold again, that was just a terrible idea,” she moaned.

“I’m not going over there to retrieve your panties for you, you have to do that yourself,” I told her solemnly as I poured her coffee.

“Stop, Tommy, I’m in too much pain this morning to deal with this.”

“Well, Ok, if you insist, I will go over to Harold’s house and ask for my wife’s panties back. What color were they? You never let me see you in lingerie.”

Carrie just stuck her tongue out at me.

“Should I take a bag over to collect them in, or should I just carry them in my hands so the whole neighborhood can see me retrieving my wife’s drawer’s from Harold’s house?”

“Gah, why are you doing this to me?” cried my wife and she put her head down on the dining room table.

“Do you want to tell me what happened on your date with Harold yesterday?”

“You keep STUBBORNLY referring to them as dates...”

“You flashed your lingerie for this jerk right in front of me and then came home stoned with your panties missing and your tits hanging out, Carrie.” I tried hard to keep my voice even, but I was starting to get myself worked up. “If it’s not a date, what the fuck should I call it? A random hookup with the loudest, rudest guy in the neighborhood?”

“I actually think David Eggers is ruder,” said my wife, turning her head to face me, cheek still firmly pressed against the table.

“Oh yes, about that,” I said, feeling my anger swell. “That arrogant prick came over here yesterday and Adam revealed that you are on Tinder. If you think that guy is so rude, why was he able to swipe and connect with you on Tinder? You must have swiped him right first.”

Carrie pulled a newspaper over her head. “Rude guys sort of turn me on,” she said in a soft voice.

I felt my chest constrict when my wife admitted that. I realized that I was pushing her too hard. I needed her to lie to me. Maybe I wasn’t able to handle the truth from her own mouth.

“Is that what you want to hear?” asked my wife. She pulled the newspaper off of her head and laid her head on her arms as she looked at me.

“No, I don’t want to hear that,” I admitted shakily.
